12 x 12 (Conviviality)

Twelve twelve minutes films collected form the garden

For Bruno Hulin

When arriving at the farm in early 2024, while looking for photographs, I noticed that the crevices and nooks of the building were inhabited by nesting birds.

Although unfamiliar with video, I don’t know why it seemed less frightening to me to keep track of my experience with these birds and their use of the place by filming them rather than photographing them. Perhaps out of apprehension about wildlife photography, about which I know nothing and for which I am not equipped. Perhaps out of deference to Jean-Luc Mylayne. Without any further idea of how to film birds, I improvised. The setup is simplistic: camera on a tripod, if necessary fixed to the top of a ladder, start recording, and disappear. The device stops recording after twelve minutes.

Later on, a snowing tree attracted my attention, too. Plus tard, un arbre neigeant m’a aussi fait signe. Even later, some birds agreed to be photographed.

The twelve films will be uploaded as they are created.

12 x 12 is part of an artistic research on the possibility of photographing in the Anthropocene, initiated out of necessity and pursued thanks to a grant by the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles of the French ministry of Culture. The title of this research, Conviviality, is a direct quotation of Ivan Illich’s book, Tools for Conviviality (Harper and Row, 1973).
